Tukwila, WA (July 6, 2010) – With the World Cup winding down to its final matches, American soccer fans are now shifting some of their attention to the resuming U.S. Open Cup. The quarter finals get on their way this evening with two matches, followed by a highly anticipated confrontation between the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Seattle Sounders. This match will take place on the new FieldTurf Duraspine Pro field at the Starfire Sports Complex.
The Seattle Sounders are the U.S. Open Cup defending champions, and they play all their MLS home games on FieldTurf at Qwest Field. For this game, however, the Sounders will be hosting the MLS’s best team on a brand new FieldTurf surface at Starfire Complex, boasting the most evolved turf system available today, the FieldTurf Duraspine Pro.
"It's probably the best turf field now in the area," said Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid earlier today.
The installation of the new field at Starfire was completed at the end of June, and in addition to U.S. Open Cup matches, will be the practice facility for the Sounders. A truly state-of-the-art surface designed specifically for high performance soccer.
The LA Galaxy come into the Seattle area with an MLS leading-season and representation from two National Team players who recently returned from the World Cup in South Africa. Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle proudly wore the Stars and Stripes in the world’s largest tournament, but now return to their regular team in quest of a U.S. Open Cup and an MLS Title.
The opening whistle for tomorrow night’s game is at 7 P.M. PT.
