Chinese Taipei wins first Test match against Hong Kong

May 19, 2008

Chinese Taipei beat Hong Kong “A” team 32-17 in the first of a two-Test series last night at King’s Park Sports Ground.

The rain persisted throughout the 80-minute match, which kicked-off at 7.15pm.

Chinese Taipei’s win came courtesy of six tries and one conversion, against three tries and a conversion by Hong Kong.

“I think the team did quite well in some areas,” said Chinese Taipei coach Su Fu-Jen. “They fought hard, but their mutual understanding with each other was not great. They’re all very young players, so they were rushing a bit.”

“The Hong Kong team is also very young, but they had more personal breakthroughs today,” Su added.

Hong Kong A team coach Kane Jury expressed disappointed in the result, saying, “We thought we were in for a chance to win, but it didn’t happen. The concentration and intensity was not enough.”

Hong Kong’s Max Woodward and debutant Tim Sutton ran in a try each, but Chinese Taipei’s Lin Tz-Wen and Tien Sheng-Chieh leveled the score with a try each, bringing the half-time score to 10-10.

With the scores level at 10-10 at half-time, Hong Kong had every chance to topple Chinese Taipei. But a further try from Renaud Chauvinis and conversion from Mike Mckee was trailed by four tries and a conversion from the opponents.

The second Test match will be held at 7.15pm at King’s Park Sports Ground on Friday.

“This Friday, we will build on what we learnt tonight. There were few unseen things. We will look at the overall execution of our basic skill and work on our set pieces,” said Jury.
