Maintenance Guidelines for Sports and Landscaping

While there is significantly less maintenance with FieldTurf than with natural grass and competing artificial grass and synthetic turf systems, some tasks are necessary to ensure your artificial turf continues to perform at the highest level.

Sports Guidelines

These basic maintenance procedures will ensure compliance with FieldTurf’s industry-best third-party insured warranty and keep your field in optimal condition. Refer to the FieldTurf Maintenance Guidelines for details and recommended frequency on each maintenance activity along with steps to follow throughout the life of your FieldTurf field.

There are 4 basic maintenance operations that all FieldTurf fields require according to our recommended maintenance schedule.  We simply call it BARS – for Brushing, Aerating, Raking and Sweeping.

BARS Maintenance

  1. Brushing - Rejuvenates the matted fibers and levels the top portion of the infill.
  2. Aerating - Minimizes risk of slight compaction, by penetrating and loosening the infill with rotating tines.
  3. Raking - Prevents fibers from matting down and ensures infill is loosened.
  4. Sweeping - Ensures debris doesn't get into the infill.

Other necessary maintenance procedures should be done periodically and according to FieldTurf’s maintenance guidelines.

  • Inspection of line markings and seams - In the unlikely event that line markings or seams come apart, it's important to notify FieldTurf Customer Service right away.
  • Infill topdressing - For high traffic areas, rubber may need to be added to the top layer of infill.
  • Snow Removal - Snow must be removed according to field-friendly guidelines.

The product can be purchased in a liquid form and is safe for applications on FieldTurf surfaces without affecting the color and appearance of your FieldTurf field.

Landscaping Guidelines

FieldTurf Lawns

Remove organic materials from the surface with a leaf blower. Rakes may be required for removing heavier objects, but a leaf blower is the ideal tool for general upkeep. A stiff, natural bristle broom can be used to "fluff" high traffic areas.  Sticky spills should be hosed off to prevent them from attracting dirt and bugs. Paint is best kept away but can be softened with paint remover and then rinsed off. Open fires, ashes or hot coals are best avoided as the turf surface can get slightly scorched.

Pet Areas

Droppings can be picked up just as you would with regular grass. The difference is that regular grass has high and low spots that can hide those droppings. You can then simply rinse off with a hose. Some of our kennel customers use either "Simple Green" or a 10:1 water to bleach mixture to sanitize their common areas, but this isn't usually necessary for regular residential applications.

The application of a type of bacteria fighting chemical, cleaner and deodorizer is required to keep the surface clean. We have talked with kennel clients, and they speak highly of the product "Simple Green" as a very good cleaner, disinfectant, and deodorizer. Another bio-active odor counteracting solution is AlphaZymePlus. The target should be a full-spectrum germicide that kills bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The most common product in this business is the quaternary ammonium chloride compounds or Quats. Brand names include KennelSol®, Roccal-D, Parvasol II, Cetylcide II, A-33 Dry, Quatracide, and AirChem. AlphaZymePlus has bio-active stabilized bacterial spores that use enzymes to break down and remove animal organic compounds. The byproduct is CO2 and water.

Signature Series Putting Greens

Maintenance consists of keeping the green free of debris which can best be done with a low speed leaf blower. You will want to roll your green each spring, at least, with a water-filled roller. These can be rented inexpensively from your nearest home improvement store. If you desire to maintain a higher stimpmeter roll speed, you’ll need to roll your green more frequently.
