For the third year in a row Towson University has hosted the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship, a true testament of the durability, quality, and playability of the FieldTurf system. The semi-finals and championship game were played at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Maryland.
The tournaments marks the 12th time the championship was held in Maryland, with University of Maryland (4), John Hopkins University (2), UMBC (1), Loyola College (1), and the US Naval Academy (1) also hosting championships.
Proving it is truly the most sought-after, and the highest performing surface, 10 of the 16 teams entering the final tournament all possess FieldTurf facilities. And FieldTurf was not the only common theme in the strongest teams - they all hailed from the Mid-Atlantic region. Having a FieldTurf home field proved to be quite advantageous for the Maryland Terrapins, as they walked over their competition early in the bracket.
In the semi-finals the Terps led for most of the game, entering the second half with a 7-2 lead. In the second half Syracuse pulled within 3 goals, but Maryland’s offense caught fire and scored six unanswered in just over 4 minutes, leading to at 14-5 victory.
Their next opponent, and 5 time defending champions, Northwestern University Wildcats, hopped out to an early 6-0 and things looked bleak for the Terps. But Maryland battled back holding the Wildcats scoreless for 27 minutes while potting a few themselves to end up with a 13-11 victory to shock the defending champions. The victory gave Maryland their 10th Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship in school history, the most of any school.
