Indianapolis, IN (March 1, 2010) – College players from across the nation have gathered for the annual week-long NFL Scouting Combine and the performances on Lucas Oil Stadium’s FieldTurf have been outstanding.
The highlight event of the week is the 40-yard dash. Current Titans running back Chris Johnson holds the NFL Combine’s record time of 4.24, which he achieved in 2008 on the very same FieldTurf surface. The record has been closely challenged by a few contenders this year, but remains intact.
The fastest time of the weekend was achieved by Clemson wide receiver Jacoby Ford, with an impressive mark of 4.28 seconds. Ford was an early favorite, along with LSU’s return specialist Trindon Holliday who recorded an official time of 4.34, the second fastest time of this year’s Combine.
The NFL Scouting Combine is held at the home of the Indianapolis Colts, and has been showcased on a FieldTurf surface since 2005. FieldTurf’s innovative artificial turf system is the most widely used turf product in the NFL with 20 teams using the surface for stadium and/or practice fields.
FieldTurf’s patented system includes a mix of silica sand and cryogenic rubber laid between the turf fibers, which allow players to play on a perfectly balanced surface. The infill provides ultimate safety to prevent injuries, yet offers tremendous resilience to allow players to achieve top performance, such as the impressive 40-yard dash times they have recorded so far.
Other notable times during the weekend’s Combine include running backs Jahvid Best from Cal and C.J. Spiller from Clemson, running 4.35 and 4.37 respectively. Last year, not a single running back had broken the 4.45 seconds mark.
Perhaps the most impressive test of the combine so far has been Dorin Dickerson’s time of 4.40. The 6’4 tight end from Pittsburgh weighed in at 226 lbs. and holds the 4th fastest time among the offensive skill positions behind Ford, Best and Spiller.
Defensive linemen and linebackers will be taking the field today and defensive backs will run on Tuesday.
